Body

How to Steps

Creighton requires all users of university applications to have a Blue Passwords paired with your NETID. You will be asked to create a new password twice a year. When you are asked to change your credentials, it is a great opportunity for you to STRENGTHEN your password! Below are several ways to accomplish this:

  •  Use a phrase like Cactus Giraffe*Pluto*47 !. Mixing caps, with small letters, numbers and special characters makes your password much stronger than one of your grand children's names.
  • Use a longer phrase like: Iluv2eatpizzaon2sdays!. More characters means more strength.

How to build a strong passphrase

  • A strong passphrase should contain at least 14 characters, but the longer the better.
  • A strong passphrase should use a mix of unrelated words, numbers, symbols, and uppercase and lowercase letters.
  • A strong passphrase should avoid using common phrases, personal information, or words that are related to the account or service you are using.
  • A strong passphrase should be unique and not reused for different accounts or devices.

Examples of good and bad passphrases

  • Bad passphrase: ilovepizza123
    • Why it's bad: It's too short, it uses a common word and a predictable number, and it's related to the account (pizza delivery service).
  • Good passphrase: Cactus Giraffe*Pluto*47
    • Why it's good: It's long, it uses a mix of unrelated words, symbols, and numbers, and it's not related to the account.
  • Bad passphrase: tobeornottobe
    • Why it's bad: It's too short, it uses a common phrase, and it's easy to guess.
  • Good passphrase: Rainy platypus Day dr3am$Away
    • Why it's good: It's long, it uses a mix of words, symbols, and uppercase and lowercase letters, and it's not a common phrase.
