Microsoft Email Encryption – Receiving a Secure Message
University policy states that sensitive email must not be sent via unencrypted email. In addition, HIPAA regulations state that ePHI cannot be sent via email unless encrypted. Users outside of Creighton may receive an encrypted email (secure message) from someone at Creighton if it contains ePHI.
View and reply to an encrypted message for Microsoft 365 recipients using Outlook
When receiving an encrypted email message from another Creighton person, there is nothing you need to do as Microsoft will automatically decrypt message within the Outlook client. You may reply and send just like a normal message.
View and reply to an encrypted message without using Microsoft 365 Outlook
If you're not using Outlook with Microsoft 365, your encrypted message will contain a link in the message body.
- Select Read the message.
- Select how you would like to sign in to read the message. If your email provider is Google, Yahoo, or Microsoft, you can select Sign in with Google, Yahoo, or Microsoft respectively. Otherwise, select sign in with a one-time passcode.
- Once you receive the passcode in an email message, make a note of the passcode, then return to the web page where you requested the passcode and enter the passcode, and select Continue.
