Guidelines

Below is the current standard format employed by myIT Support when naming computers owned and managed by Creighton University. The ultimate goal is to give each unit identity so as to enable accountability, and some sense of location. Currently, Windows computer names are limited to 15 alpha-numeric characters and that same limit is extended to CU managed Apple workstations and laptops.

Computers Assigned to Individuals

The standard on Omaha main campus is usually the department/Division followed by the netID of the assigned user and the type of computer M (mobile/laptop) or D (desktop/tower) so, a School of Medicine laptop computer assigned to an employee would be labeled: SOM-abc12345M

In some cases, location is more helpful than the department (like a remote campus such as a hospital) the computer prefix is replaced with a convention for location. A Creighton desktop computer at Bergan hospital assigned to a user would look like: BH-abc12345D

Classroom Computers

Use the CR prefix followed by the Facilities building code name and room number with a D. So, the desktop computer in Old Gym classroom 326 would be: CR-ogym-326D

Public Computers (labs, kiosks, etc)

Generally, a department prefix, the Facilities 4-character building code, room number plus some unique identifier and device type (M or D). So, the Student Services Center for Advising computer in Hixson Lied G06 would be: SS-HLSBG06D

If a space has multiple public systems use some kind of numeric designation. For instance, the Student Services room above might have multiple public systems: SS-HLSBG06PC1D

All personal computer naming prefixes managed by myIT Support are contained in our Support Teams site. (including Facilities 4 digit codes).
