Power Reset on Lenovo Portables

Common Signs or Symptoms:

Lenovo laptops have internal batteries which maintain power to the system, even when the system is unplugged.  In some rare circumstances, the unit may appear to be turned off, or asleep, but will not wake up or power on as normal.  In these situations, a power reset may return the unit to a working state

Troubleshooting Steps:

To perform a power reset on a Lenovo laptop:

  1. Unplug the system from any power source, including docks
  2. On units which possess a removable battery, remove the battery
  3. Turn the laptop over and locate the small emergency reset hole on the bottom surface of the unit.  The hole is typically unlabeled, and only large enough to fit a small paperclip.
  4. Use a straightened paperclip to press into the emergency reset hole, and depress the button inside for at least 10 seconds.
  5. Remove the paperclip, turn the laptop back upright, re-connect a power source, and press the power button
  6. If the reset was successful, the system will boot back up into Windows
