Deleting User Folders on Lab or Shared Macs.

Prerequisites / Minimum Requirements

Shared Apple System is Low on Disk Space or Reporting Low Disk Space.

End State / Outcome

Disk Space Freed up and System No Longer Reporting Low Disk Space.

How to Steps

1. Login to shared Apple system with cuadmin credentials.

2. Terminal application must have Full Disk Access to run the commands.  Check System Settings, Privacy & Security, Full Disk Access to confirm.

3. If Full Disk Access is not granted to Terminal Application, add it by Clicking the Plus Sign and browse to the Utilities Folder and Click Terminal and Open.

4. Open Terminal Application from the Utilities Menu.

5. Type: sudo du -hxd1 /Users and press Enter.  Provide password.

6. You will receive output similar to this:

     20G /Users/efm88187

     256M /Users/ftg43505

     1.1G /Users/jdb54051

     1.4G /Users/jmcadmin

     33G /Users/kky14134

7. Determine which user folders can be deleted.

8. In Terminal type: sudo rm -rf /Users/netid where netid is the users folder to be deleted.  Provide password.

9. Retype command in Step 5 to confirm removal of user folder.
